- You can't know where you're going unless you know where you've been.
Like all cliches, the two given above are fundamentally true. The irony of their truth is that by now the human race should be bursting with wisdom and good sense. A quick look around dispels that notion in a hurry.
We wouldn't be able to blame ourselves for the profound stupidity of so many human beings if all of a person's knowledge and wisdom disappeared with death. But the development of writing and books firmly eliminates any excuses for the perpetual state of ignorance the human race seems so determined to hold on to. After all, what good are bridges if, after they are built, we race across them to kill those on the other side?
If any hope for the human race does exist, it lies in the study of history. It's all been written, just waiting for more than a few scholars to pay it some attention. The links to the right will offer some tiny bits and pieces of history from around the world. With regard to your paying attention to some of it, it's never too late to start. If you have an interest in history, you must visit the website of the World History Association. In addition, students should be reading the Journal of World History.
