Histology

The word "histology" comes from the Greek "histo" meaning tissue and "logos" meaning treatise. In practice, histology studies the form, structure, and appearance of animal and plant tissue under a microscope, as opposed to gross anatomy that involves observing structures with the naked eye. A device called a microtome is used to cut thin slices of tissue, then the slices are normally stained to help elucidate structure.

A course in histology will involve study of the following topics:

  • Methods of Histology
  • The Cell
  • Classification of Tissues
  • Epithelial Tissue
  • Connective Tissue
  • Adipose Tissue
  • Cartilage
  • Bone
  • Blood
  • Muscle Tissue
  • Nerve Tissue
  • Cardiovascular System
  • Lymphatic System
  • Integumentary System
  • Digestive System
  • Respiratory System
  • Urinary System
  • Endocrine Organs
  • Male Reproductive System
  • Female Reproductive System
  • Eye
  • Ear

Students interested in histology should read the Journal of Molecular Histology. In addition, there are many good books on this topic available at Google and Amazon.com. There is a superb histology tutorial made available by the University of Florida College of Medicine.
