Critics harshly rejected Jude the Obscure, written by Thomas Hardy, after it appeared in 1895 as "dirt, drivel and damnation." It is a story, according to Hardy, "of a deadly war waged between flesh and spirit." Jude is discouraged by poverty, social disapproval and rejection, a miserable marriage, and the deaths of his children. The criticism of this work is thought by some to be the reason Hardy ceased writing novels and turned his focus on poetry and drama.
