Astrologers warn a Polish king that his infant son, Segismund, will grow to manhood and overthrow the throne. Afraid that the prediction will come true, the king has the boy taken to a tower where he remains, chained to the floor. Many years later, king has a change of heart and has him drugged and brought to the castle. Once Segismund sees his father, his desire for revenge overtakes him. The king has him drugged and returned to the tower. When Segismund awakes, the guard tells him that he had never left the tower and that his memory of events in the castle is but a dream.
