The South African, the Brazilian, and the Indian prison systems share a host of similarities. One of the most important is that the three countries confine over 100 prisoners. In South African, Jewkes, Crewe, and Bennett (2016) identify that in South African, there are 161 984 serving prisoners. In Brazil, the number of the currently confined individuals is at a high of 659, 020. In the case of India, 418,536 prisoners are found in the confinement facilities. In most international prison systems, a limit of 100,000 prisoners is observed (Darke, 2017). As a matter of fact, Brazil, India, and South Africa are among the seven global prison systems that have exceeded this limit. It has also been expressed that in each of the three countries, the capacity of the prison facilities has been exceeded. What this means is that there is congestion or overcrowding in prison systems.
