Major Project
The major project for the course should be focused on a specific, well-defined topic related to the teaching of mathematics at the college level. Topics could include the teaching of a particular course, teaching of a particular mathematical content area (e.g., limits, derivative), a particular pedagogical technique (e.g., cooperative/active learning, using writing in instruction, inquiry), or an educational issue related to curriculum (e.g., What is an optimal balance between skills and
concepts for a student completing a calculus course?), instruction (e.g. When should students use calculators?), or assessment (e.g., How do you assess problem solving ability?) in undergraduate mathematics. The project will include a paper and a classroom presentation.
Topic: Methods of assessing problem-solving
Written report
The written report must have the following components:
• A brief history of the topic/issue: How did it come about? What is its currents status in undergraduate mathematics education? What is its significance?
• Problems associated with pedagogy or learning the content of the course (from
literature).
• Suggestions for teaching the content based on current research and national standards.
• Ways in which these difficulties may be addressed: Learning theories; instructional tools, techniques—Examine the literature.
• How you would design the course: structure, content, sequence?
• How do you assess that conceptual understanding is achieved?
• If you are examining the teaching/learning of a specific course, what textbook will you use for it: How do you decide which textbook addresses the problem areas relative to learning and teaching or curriculum?
• Include a minimum of two lessons illustrating your application of ideas to classroom practice and examples of activities that are crucial to the development of the content along with a justification of why they are included.

Several decades later, in 2000, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) published their “Principles and standards for school mathematics” which also emphasizes the importance of integrating problem-solving in everyday mathematics curriculum.
