I am an experienced tutor and teacher with a Bachelor's degree in Physics - Earth Science and a Master's Degree in Geoscience. I have experience tutoring and teaching Math, Science, and Computers at various levels up through professional. I've done test-preparation tutoring for the K-12 state tests, college admissions tests, grad school admissions exams, and professional certification exams.
I am fluent in English and can communicate to various degrees of fluency in Japanese, Hebrew, and American Sign Language. I have experience working with Deaf and hard-of-hearing students in ASL, Signed English, and SimCom environments. Additionally, I have worked with adult learners, returning students, English language learners, and students with special needs.
Overall, my philosophy has always been that teaching should be student-centered and that learning should be fun! I recognize the unique experiences and ideas my students bring to the classroom. I tailor my examples to their interests and try to show them how my course relates to their majors and their lives.
The most rewarding moments in my job are when people who previously thought a subject was too hard for them and that they would never get it finally do. I firmly believe that these Aha-moments happen inside and outside of a traditional classroom.
As a student, I was always asking, “Why are we learning this?” I did not ask this question simply to challenge my teachers or because I did not want to learn. Rather, I asked it because I wanted to understand what I could do with the knowledge and how I could apply it. As a teacher, I aim to answer these questions during each lesson. In this way, I try to make my coursework relevant and show students how they can apply the material for themselves. I encourage students to consider different perspectives, and I present content as a set of tools which can be applied in many different situations, rather than as facts to be memorized or only used in my class.
I understand that we all have different learning styles and believe that no single approach will work for everyone. I try to explain things in different ways, rather than just repeating the same thing over again if a student does not get it. I try to help students figure-out what works best for them. I also show my students multiple methods to solve a problem and encourage them to use their own methods as well. I want them to learn to think critically and be able solve new and complex problems. I believe that today’s challenges are not simply chapters in books or headlines on the internet. Rather, they are complex problems that affect real people and our environment.
