IntroductionLocated in the northern region of Afghanistan, Sar-e-Pul is one of the 34 provinces in the country, with a population of about 530,000. It has 6 districts (Kohestanat, Sar-e Pul, Sayad, Gosfandi, Sancharak, and Sozmaqala) that are further divided into 896 villages. The provincial capital is Sar-e-Pul, which is located in Sari-Pul District. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has a presence in Afghanistan as it seeks to support human, social and economic development in the country that is fighting terrorism, insecurity, poverty and low human development index. Consequently, the agency has an elaborate database on various aspects of the country, including the national and regional population, geography, economy, human settlement, healthcare, transport, accessibility, and many others. Within its website (http://asdc.immap.org), USAID (2017) provides a detailed presentation of these statistics in maps and documentations, which are accessed through registration at the site. The Sar-e-Pul Province, like the other regions of the country, is well documented and covered in the USAID website and makes the site an important source of information about the province and its characteristics. In particular, the website provide detailed information about the country (and thus the provincial) statistics regarding to such matters as population, physical features, risks due to earthquakes and flooding, healthcare accessibility and development, transportation networks and systems, agriculture, and water sources. Consequently, the purpose of this paper is to use the website to develop an in-depth description of the human, economic, and physical geography of the province. The paper will use the documented information as well as the interactive maps provided in the website, which makes it possible to develop more knowledge about the area, life and risks that a new person is likely to encounter on a mission to the province.
