In 1953, Cambridge University created the world’s first computer science degree program. The subsequent 50 years of innovation and development in computation led to the creation of new programming languages and improved digital computers which became more computationally powerful and physically smaller with each generation. In 1953 the COBOL programming language was released, quickly followed by FORTRAN in 1954. These two languages marked the first two widely used programming languages. In 1969, the UNIX operating system was developed and released by Bell Laboratories. In the 1970s, IBM, Apple, and Radio Shack innovated personal computing by releasing small form-factor, cost-effective computers for the consumer, bringing computers into the household. In 1985, Microsoft launched its revolutionary Windows operating system. The year 1990 saw the development of HTML and the creation of the World Wide Web, and in 1996 was the advent of the search engine Google. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw the popularization of the Internet. In 2007 Apple released the iPhone, the first smartphone which brought computer functions to a mobile platform. In the decade since, computers have permeated every aspect of our modern technical world through the data revolution, with all of the world’s information available at our fingertips, at the swipe of a finger.
