As a means of ensuring and promoting the health and safety of workers in the United States the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (United States Department of Labor, 2011) created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to guarantee safe and healthy working environments for men and women working conditions by establishing and enforcing compliance the training, education, and other avenues offering assistance to maintain these conditions. Under this law employers are charged with the responsibility of providing a safe work environment.The Act was passed to prevent workers from being seriously injured or killed while on the job. Employers must comply with all safety standards pertaining to OSHA. Any safety and health hazards found must be corrected. Employees must be made aware of any chemical hazards by training, labels, color coding systems, MSDS books and other applicable methods. Clear and concise documentation of work related injuries and illnesses must be on record. Any and all citations, injury and illness summary data and the OSHA “Job Safety and Health – It’s The Law” must be posted. Conversely, employees also have rights and responsibilities are entitled to work in an environment which does not present a risk of serious harm.
