Leonardo da Vinci, painter of many exquisite works of art, made a profound impact on the world with his masterpiece entitled Last Supper. It was commissioned by Ludovico il Moro and was created on a wall of the dining room at Santa Maria delle Grazie convent in Milan (Shulman). Santa Maria delle Grazie was Ludovico’s favorite church, and he hired Bramante to tear down certain parts and rebuild them in a grander style than the original. The exact date of Leonardo’s commission is not known, but the demolition of the nave and choir and the rebuilding of those areas, as well as of the refectory, was accomplished in 1492 (Vallentin). Leonardo painted the Last Supper between the years 1494 and 1498 (Kinney). It is considered by many to represent the “climax” of his career (Clark). Unfortunately, the painting has disintegrated dramatically in the years since its creation.
