History of Roman music

Ancient Rome was a cosmopolitan society that absorbed some of the traits of the people it conquered-particularly the Etruscans, Greeks and Egyptians. The Romans are not said to be creative or original in case of music sense. They did attach any spiritual ethos to music, as did the Greeks. Roman music was mostly monophonic (that is, single melodies with no harmony) and that the melodies were based on an elaborate system of scales (called 'modes'). The rhythm of vocal music may have followed the natural metre of the lyrics (retrieved from crystal links). Romans highly appreciated music that was used on various occasions including entertainment spectacles such as gladiator flights, public events, military parades, or religious events such as weddings, sacrifices or funerals. Art and culture was associated with the upper classes or the elite. Despite their great achievements in painting, sculpture, mosaic making, poetry, prose and drama, the Romans always had a kind of inferiority complex in the arts when compared to the Greeks....
