List of procedures to be used
1. Liquid Nitrogen used to freeze Drosophila material
2. Use of ethanol to sterilize benches for Drosophila work
3. Use of CO2 to anaesthetize flies
4. Use of glass slides and coverslips
5. Autoclaves for sterilization of solutions and equipment
6. Use of hazard chemicals, like Acrylamide, Ethidium bromide
7. Sharpened tweezers used to dissect tissues
8. Use of lasers in Centre for Cell Imaging, use of UV rays for visualization of nucleic acids during electrophoresis.
The person involved and status
Masters Student, research associate, and the subordinate staff research associate is presumed to be well trained.
Master students are under training
Subordinate staffs are untrained but, will be trained in the future for each specific task such as Autoclaving
FOR INITIAL BASIC TRAINING
A postdoctoral fellow will train them about how to handle equipment and chemicals.
For imaging training, the concerned department will train them on how to protect themselves from the laser.
a. People handling liquid nitrogen
b. People handling CO2
c. People handling autoclave
d. People handling Ethanol for bench sterilization
e. People directly handling hazardous chemicals
f. People handling sharp instruments such as tweezers for dissection,
g. People handling confocal microscopy/other kinds of microscopy that have the potential for laser exposure.
For a, b, c and d the subordinate staff would be at a higher risk.
Following an accident, if there are close surroundings then all other peoples that are present in the vicinity may be affected especially in cases such as accidental explosion and spread of gasses.
For e, f and g, the research scholar, project associate may be at direct risk as they are handling the experimentation.
Identified hazards are: direct exposure to liquid Nitrogen causing burns due to low temperature, inflammation of the conjunctiva, inflammation of nasal epithelium, direct exposure to fumes of corrosive chemicals causing burns and blisters to skin, nasal passage inflammation,
laceration injuries due to tweezers,
eye/retinal injury due to laser exposure,
eye/retinal injury due to UV exposure,
long term psychological or neurological disturbances due to continuous exposure of certain chemicals such as liquid bisacrylamide and TEMED etc,the teratogenic effect due to EtBr.Proper supervision.
Always more than one person should work in the lab.
People should be trained not to work in off hours and alone
