Zygomycota, also known as ‘Molds’ have both sexual and asexual reproduction. The mycelia have different mating types and when different types meet they may form hyphal extensions called gametangia each containing several haploid nuclei. The gametangia fuse into a common structure called the zygosporangium – it is a round fungal element with a rough thick outer coating that contains several haploid nuclei from each parent. The process of different mycelia fusing to form a common structure with a common cytoplasm is called plasmogamy.
