Prions are infectious proteins which can cause a series of brain disorders known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. The first disorder from this group appeared in England more than 200 years ago. It is known as scrapie and it affected only sheep. In 1985, similar disease appeared in cattle and was called mad cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalitis - BSE). The symptoms are uncontrolled shaking of animals’ body, aggression and loosing of coordination. This condition is always fatal [1, 2].
A few human diseases with similar symptoms are known. One of them is Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease (CJD) also characterized by uncontrolled movements and hallucinations. This condition was diagnosed in 50-, 60- or 70 - year olds. Beside CJD, in the first half of 20th century strange illness spread through Papua New Guinea. The condition is known as kuru which means “to tremble with fear”. Kuru was quickly spread in this country and most patients were women and children of both sexes. As in other mentioned diseases, the first symptom is mild incoordination. But the illness is very progressive and after few months it becomes severe and affected people are unable to walk or even stand without help. People usually die in less than 9 months. After many researches, scientists came to idea that cannibalism is the explanation of the illness....
