Poster Assignment Instructions
GENERAL POSTER DRAFT GUIDELINES
The draft should include all major sections/slides of a traditional poster which relates to your Microarray Experiment.
This includes: Title Slide, Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results/Discussion & Conclusions).
All major figures/tables/data/interpretations asked for (see Specific Instructionsbelow) should be included in the draft.
Use bullet points to describeslide content (only use paragraph form for your abstract).
Your slides DO NOT have to look completely dressed up or formatted perfectly. The evaluation of your poster draft will be based on the inclusion of the all the major content/data analysis and a good idea of where you are going with your gene hypothesis using the available literature.
Use PowerPoint to create your slides or any other presentation software you like (you can create a complete poster board or individualslides depending on what software program you are using;either are acceptable). DO NOT use Word to create your draft.
On a separate slide or paper Include a mock-up sketch with the placement of slides, text and graphics (i.e. how you will layout your slides on the final poster board provided on the poster day)
SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR POSTER CONTENT& ITS PRESENTATION
1. Title slide
2. Abstract slide summarizing your micro array experiment (paragraph format).Be brief ~ 8 sentences (2 for intro, 2 for methods, 2 for results, 2 for discussion)
3. Introduction slide(s)(provides context and background information about why you did the study, state your overall hypothesis (the effects of RA on gene expression, you may also want to provide your gene hypothesis here).References for background info must be provided.
4. Methods slide. One slide with the general scheme of your experiment (one general figure is acceptable).Figure(s) must be referenced. Magic Tool software must be referenced here.

6.Discussion slides -include answers to the following questions in relation to your microarray experiment. Compare your findings to the literature to support (or not) your results and interpretations.
What effect did retinoic acid have overall on gene expression?
What did the comparative data reveal? Were any of your genes also identified in these student’s top twenty lists? If so, were they similarly upregulated or repressed? (student lists to compare will be posted on blackboard through the course discussion board). What did the ontological analysis show? How might this relate to treatment?
Discuss your gene of interest and how your findings relate to treatment Elaborate on your own gene characterization and interpretation with respect to the data.
Include a hypothesis on why “your gene” could have been induced or repressed with respect to THCtreatment. Use the literature, figures and schemes to formulate this section.
Visualization softwares (ie. Panther) must be referenced here.
7. Conclude with the significance of your studies. This is brief -~ one sentence for each main component: overall retinoic acid effect on gene expression, comparative data, gene of interest
8. Cite several appropriate references in a standard format(use a final reference slide). Use numerical CSE format throughout.
