Journal Report Assignment Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize you with reading of research papers. Another goal is to read these papers with the intent of understanding the use of specific research methods within the context of an actual research project. What is Expected You are to select two research papers in two different biomedical journals that utilize molecular methods covered in this class. The experimental approaches that are used should be those that have been already covered or are scheduled to be covered in upcoming classes. Your report must be used to illustrate two different experimental methodologies. You are to: Read the research papers carefully. Explain what the overall objective of the research reported in the research paper. Describe the objective of the specific experiment utilizing the technique being illustrated. Discuss the reason for choosing the overall approach that was used in the research. Explain how the data obtained from the experimentation supports the conclusions. Format of the Assignment There should only be ONE report that contains the analysis of two papers. Number the pages the consecutively. Give a title to each paper. This title should be different from the title of the paper but it should be appropriate to your discussion of the experimental approach taken by the investigators for each paper. For each paper, also provide the citation in one of the accepted professional journal formats. This citation must contain the actual title of the paper that you use for the experimental analysis. Put this citation immediately below your own title of the discussion. There need not be more than 3 typed pages of text (the narrative section) for each paper. You should insert in key figures and/or tables of data in addition to the narrative section. However, do NOT insert more than 3 figures and tables. They can be inserted anywhere within the article. Submit the assignment as ONE PDF file to my email address. Also submit each of the two original papers as separate PDF files. Therefore, the total number of attachments cannot be more than 3 attachments: your journal report, paper #1, and paper #2. The eloquence of language, formatting, etc. are not important.

The overall objective of the study was to investigate the effect of aging on pain perception induced by inflammation. Chronic pain is very common in older population and understanding of its mechanism is of great interest in clinical practice. However, there are contradictory results about nociception in elders, with both increased and decreased response reported. The results are partially related to the nociception method used. This study aimed to show the changes related to age in animal model of inflammatory nociception induced by formalin in mice, and to further investigate the possible mechanism of action if there are age related nociception changes by measuring and comparing the expression of nociceptive genes TRPV1 and TRPA1 in spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion, increase in cortisol levels in spinal cord after nociception stimulation and expression of its target genes NF-κB inhibitor alpha (IκBα) and inducible isoform of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS).
The study showed that old mice compared to young ones have significantly reduced inflammatory nociception. The further investigate and show possible causes for such result, the authors measured the expression of two genes that are important in transmission of painful stimuli in spinal cord....
