Learning Activity #1 - Theme 1

A manager is a person who is able to achieve organizational goals/purpose by working with and through people along with other organizational resources.

The role of the manager traditionally has been the person who has set short term goals for the organization to plan, organize, and execute tasks that include the process, procedure, and production of the organization’s purpose and vision.

LA 1 After reading the material for this week, think of a manager, that you have worked with or currently work with, who you would define as a “good” (or “bad”) manager.
(If you have none use the internet to find one.) Supported by at least three of our class resources define why this person is a good manager.

Be sure to include in your post the definition and explanation of a manager (Section 1). What characteristics and/or what they did that that made the person you selected a “good or bad” manager?
Also, would you consider this person to be a traditional or a modern 21st Century manager? Why?
Be careful that you describe a manager and not a leader!

Learning Activity #2 - Theme 2

What is the role of the manager in an organization? The role of the manager traditionally has been the person who has set short term goals for the organization to plan, organize, and execute tasks that include the process, procedure, and production of the organization’s purpose or vision.

The modern role of the manager has developed to include the role of facilitator in the way the manager accomplishes these tasks.
Who is the 21st Century Manager? What are the characteristics of a good 21st century manager? What are the roles of the manager in the 21st century organization?

Because of the rapidly changing internal and external environment, the 21st Century manager is a person who, as a facilitator plans, organizes, and executes the process, procedures, and production of the organization’s product or services to achieve its purpose and vision.

LA 2 Compare and contrast the role of management in the 20th Century organization and the role of management in the 21st century.
How has the change in the purpose of businesses (i.e. manufacturing vs. service) and business environment, worker attitudes, and behaviors affected the role of the manager in an organization?
Discuss in detail.

Management Theory: Framework, Application, and Results

Definition of Management Theory

According to BusinessDictionary.com, Management Theory is defined as: “A collection of ideas which set forth general rules on how to manage a business or organization.
Management theory addresses how managers and supervisors relate to their organizations in the knowledge of its goals, the implementation of effective means to get the goals accomplished and how to motivate employees to perform to the highest standard.”

To accomplish this, a framework should include project management, human resource management, stakeholder management, and information technology management that cover planning, organizing, leading, and controlling (POLC) and that incorporate people, data, technology, and processes.

Explanation of Effective Management

An effective, modern era manager works within the framework to guide management processes, cognizant of leadership’s goals and strategic intent while driving toward pragmatic, shorter-term targets and tactical solutions.
Some key challenges are to 1) balance among the strategic, tactical, and operational aspects, 2) communicate scope, milestones, and targets, 3) facilitate and coordinate among multiple constituencies, 4) communicate progress, issues, and risks, and 5) drive activities leading to the stated and desired outcomes.

The key management areas outlined (project, HR, stakeholder, and IT) do not imply any order, since they all need to be performed in concert (concurrently and synchronized).

Learning Activity #1:

As an example, we can look at a manager put in charge of a strategic financial initiative in a large Fortune 1000 company.
Executive leadership identified the need to implement an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System to consolidated six finance and accounting systems into one centralized application.
This would require efforts from Finance, Technology, and Operations.
It would require new technology and data suppliers.
It would impact processes performed...
