Juniper Networks is one of the most significant global networking corporations in the market. While revenues in 2016 and 2017 were high, however, 2018 saw a slight decline. Despite such decline, the company remains a top networking business in the world focusing consistently on R&D to create innovative products and services. Due to growing competition especially in the US and European markets, Juniper planned on penetrating Asian markets, especially in countries where its business opponents have zero to little presence.
This report conducts a feasibility study of expanding into Indonesia by Juniper Networks. It evaluates the company’s existing resources and capabilities, sets of strengths and weaknesses, assesses the external environment for current networking trends, and performs a country-of-choice risk assessment. Furthermore, critical analyses through Porter’s Five Forces and the PESTEL models will be conducted to reveal strategic factors that Juniper Networks should take into account when entering the Indonesian market. Juniper Networks, Inc. is an American networking corporation that develops and markets networking products such as switches, routers, network security, network management software and other software-defined networking technology (Bloomberg, n.d.). While it has a good presence in select North American regions and EMEA countries as validated by solid revenues, its market dominance in Asia has been relatively insignificant. While it does have presence in APAC countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, the company’s market share is undoubtedly smaller when compared with those of major competitors. Due to increasing demand growth for networking technologies within APAC, the management of Juniper Networks has identified Indonesia as the top choice among additional geographic markets to serve.

Juniper Networks Inc. was founded by Pradeep Sindhu, together with Dennis Ferguson and Bjorn Liencres, in February 1996 with its headquarter based in Sunnyvale, CA. It develops and sells networking products such as switches, routers, network security, network management software, and other networking infrastructure (Bloomberg, n.d.). Additionally, the company provides technical support and professional services as well as various programs regarding education and training (Yahoo, n.d.). It has about 9,500 employees with business operations spanning over nearly 150 countries. The U.S. is its largest market, which accounts for more than 50% of company sales, while countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) altogether account for about 25% of revenues. As for the Asia Pacific (APAC) countries, they contribute a total of more than 15%. Juniper sells its products both directly to customers and through distributors, resellers, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) (Vault, n.d.).
More than 70% of the company’s demand comes from cable, telecommunications, and cloud service providers. The rest comes from corporate and institutional customers. In 2016 and 2017, the company fared well, where total annual revenues amounted to $4.99B and $5.02B, respectively. In 2018 however, the company saw a sizable decline of 7.5% from the previous year, so down to $4.65B, which may be attributed to intensifying competition. Despite the decline in revenue and ultimately profits, the company continues to remain focused on developing innovative products and expanding on a global scale (Macrotrends, n.d.).
Juniper Network consists of three major leadership teams at the top level. They are the executive leadership team, senior leadership team, and the board of directors. As of now, the executive team consists of CEO Rami Rahim (since 2014), who is also a member of the company's board of directors. Pradeep Sindhu is the founder and a former CEO and CTO of the Juniper Networks, but right now he works as the chief scientist. Other members of the executive team are Eva Andres, Senior Vice President (SVP) and Chief Human Resources Officer, Anand Athreya, EVP. The team also has a Chief Development Officer, SVP, Strategy, and Corporate Development, SVP, General Counsel and Secretary, EVP, Chief Financial Officer, SVP, and Chief Information Officer (Juniper, n.d.).
The senior leadership team is composed of Debashis Basu, who heads the SVP, Engineering – Silicon & Systems Technologies, the SVP for Supply Chain Operations, SVP and GM for APAC, SVP, Engineering – Security and Switching Products, a Corporate VP, Quality and Business Agility, a CTO of Engineering Department, and the Chief Marketing Officer.
