Company Description
DOT steel manufacturing company is renowned for its steel manufacturing operations for over 50 years. The company is for steel fabrication and its capabilities, personnel, equipment, and transportation of steel products. The company produces a variety of custom and standard products using modern designs and engineering technologies. Some of the products are made from carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel. The majority of the products produced by the company are used in coal, chemical, agricultural, mineral, oil, and energy industries. DOT steel manufacturing company has employed over 2000 employees who are stationed in various departments. Employees who work on storage tanks, plant equipment, and handles custom fabrication work in very hazardous environments.
Context of the problem
DOT steel manufacturing company has been in operations for the last 50 years. However, recent go-slows, strikes, and turnover imply that employee job satisfaction has been on the low for the last five years. Therefore, it is correct to point out that the problem of jobs satisfaction among the employees is affecting the personnel and companyâ€™s performance.
Job satisfaction refers to the aspect of how content an employee is with his or her job (Aziri, 2011). Since an individual has different levels satisfaction depending on the facets of the job, an employee may simply have a negative attitude about his or her role in the job or feel the supervision is inappropriate. Sometimes, job satisfaction depends on environmental factors, the level of employee motivation, psychological well-being, and employee interactions (Biggio & Cortese, 2013). In case an employee records a negative attitude towards his or her job it becomes a challenge to work in full capacity and improve individual and organizational performance.
DOT steel manufacturing company is now faced will cases of employeesâ€™ job dissatisfaction. The employees working in various departments where storage tanks, plant equipment, and handles custom fabrication involves a hazardous environment. The level of safety in these areas is high because of toxic materials that can harm employees. In recent years, there have been concerns about security measures as well as the lack of motivation among the employees. Also, the employees have been agitating for a pay rise to compensate for the working conditions. The supervisors in the company and engineering production departments have used wrong supervisory strategies that irritate the employees. Some of the employees who are professional engineers feel that supervisors should be qualified on matters engineering to dictate to fellow workers. The consequence of the lack of job dissatisfaction and the frequency of employee turnover has increased, thereby, affecting the output DOT steel manufacturing company.
Needs Assessment and Diagnosis
The organizational development strategy must guide the needs assessment and diagnosis aimed at improving employee job satisfaction. The needs assessment must look at both the organizational and employee needs before improving jobs satisfaction and consequently overall productivity. The needs assessments will focus on the organizational procedures, systems, leadership, culture, work environment, value systems, and leadership of the company. On the other hand, the needs assessment focus on the employee will review the major gaps between organizational human resource practice and job satisfaction. In this case, the needs assessment will inquire about the cause of employee attitudes, high rate of turnover, low motivation, and how to improve employee attitudes. Also, the employee job satisfaction needs assessment will seek to identify how an employee values their work and whether the management offers training and career development opportunities. Another integral aspect of need assessment for employee job satisfaction is team experience and satisfaction with management or organizational leadership.
