The 10 leadership traits that would promote a culture for creativity and innovation in the workplace would include the
1. Forward looking nature of the leaders as this would take the organization (like that of USA today) to a higher level of success (Hamel, 2009).
2. It also requires depoliticizing of decision making, just as Tom Curley did to create a new channel of online publications where the culture of decision making in the two channels were totally different (Hamel, 2009).
3. The work environment requires the leaders to reduce the fear of employees and increase their trust such that they are more committed towards organizational objectives and going an extra mile (Hamel, 2009).
4. Retraining of the managerial minds as this would enable the managerâ€™s deductive and analytical skills to be augmented by the systemsâ€™ thinking skills (Hamel, 2009).
5. The leaders should also provide some level of autonomy to the employees as this would help the employees to innovate and experiment their ideas to a greater good (Hamel, 2009).
6. Aiming for a higher purpose would take the organization to higher heights as the leader thinks out of the box to create innovations (Tushman, Smith, Binns, & Schulz, 2011).
7. Charisma of the leaders is a required trait that would motivate the employees to follow him and take initiatives to innovate on his lines of thought (Daft, 2014).
8. Developing an overarching identity would enable the leaders and their organizations to look forward and take the organizations farther even at times of crisis (Tushman et al., 2011).
9. Holding innovation tension at the top would enable the leaders to have responsibility for taking up new initiatives and innovations (Tushman et al., 2011).
10. Embracing inconsistency would allow the leaders to work on two different tracks or channels like Tom Curley of USA Today which enabled him to maintain traditional channel of publication and also expand online publication business (Tushman et al., 2011).
