Corrosion presents one of the most important processes that have to be taken into account when material processing is considered. Because of the variety to reactions that are possible with the surrounding, corrosion can be divided into three distinct processes based on the species included: electrochemical (ions), chemical (atoms and molecules) and physical (physical changes of material due to chemical modification). Numerous examples can be discussed for the importance of corrosion investigation, but only some of characteristic ones will be presented as illustration. Corrosion is present in the industry of the most common metals (iron, copper, and nickel) and their alloys, deterioration of structural concrete and stone in environment of enhanced humidity, surgical implants that are in contact with body liquids, etc.
In order to control the process of corrosion the mechanism of this process should be studied in details. Usually it is not possible to observe the process itself directly, so the large number of different instrumental techniques is used for indirect measurement: scanning electron microscopy for surfaces, change in dimensions and mass, vibrational spectroscopy for buildup species, electrochemical methods for measuring current and electrical potential....
