Structure of LiFePO4 has been extensively studied and is asserted that it forms an orthorhombic system within olivine family. Under–laying structure is formed by oxygen in a warped hexagonal close-packing. Iron and lithium occupy half of the octahedral sites with eight of the tetrahedral sites being filled by phosphorous. FeO6 octahedra are connected via corners in the horizontal plane (marked in blue) with LiO6 octahedra sharing edges in the same plane [Ellis et al., 2010]. Neighboring strata of iron-oxygen octahedra are connected via PO4 tetrahedra (marked red) which have a common edge with FeO6 and two additional with LiO6. LFP is the forerunner for the cathode material in rechargeable Li-ion batteries because of it low cost and low toxicity, and high stability which are major advantages over other material with numbered qualities having tremendous importance for many of the applications.
