The term Acid Mine Drainage or Acid and Metalliferrous Drainage (AMD), or Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) is basically the outflow of acidic water from the underground metal or coal mines . This phenomena occurs mostly in regions which are prone to weathering and erosion , however this is accelerated by large-scale disturbances in the earth’s crustal part .Such types of drainage is also seen in areas where large scale mining and other large construction activities have been taken place especially in rocks where abundant sulphide minerals are available or areas where large scale earth instabilities have taken place like construction sites, transportation corridors etc. In many localities, the liquid that drains from coal stocks, coal handling facilities, coal washeries, and coal waste tips can be highly acidic, and in such cases it is treated as acid rock drainage.
