Question
Annotated Outline

Steps for annotating an outline

1. Write your title at the top of the page.
a. You’ll probably modify this as you go.
2. Write down your main thesis at the top of the page.
a. Refer back to this at every stage!
3. Write down the main headings you’ll need.
a. E.g., Introduction, Site location, historical background, Results, Conclusion.
b. Headings mark the main points you will be discussing.
c. You’ll probably need to modify this later…don’t worry!
4. Then, break down these main headings into subheadings.
a. In your paper, each of these subheadings will get their own paragraph (at least!).
5. Now, write the topic sentence for each of the subheadings.
6. Write key references under the topic sentences.
7. Under references, add figures or tables that you will use.
a. Figures/tables
8. Write captions for each figure/table
a. Each figure/table must have a number, caption, and be discussed in detail in the text
b. Do not plagiarize the caption from the original publication.
9. Write notes for each subheading
a. Tell me what you’re going to cover in this section!
b. These do not have to be complete sentences; you may use telegraph style. They need to be understandable
c. Don’t just ramble here. This idea of this assignment is to start putting your information together in an organized and readable way!

Reminders

You must write in a professional and formal voice. In addition, you must write everything in your own words. Do not use quotations--paraphrase. Make sure to address each piece of information requested, even if you are not including it (e.g., not using a figure? Make sure to put “figure: none needed”)

The purpose of an outline is to organize and convey data in a logical manner. Learn how to use the outlines in your word processor. Future employers assume you know how to use advanced settings in Word or similar programs.
