Executive Summary

This project aims to design a wastewater treatment plant at the The facility will be used to treat discharged wastewater from the university premises and including the Stag Hill and Manor Park, by removing the pollutants and finally released into the environment.

Considering the nature of the wastewater to be treated and the expected quality of treated wastewater, site-specific conditions, and available resources, the treatment process was selected by referring to the literature. The proposed treatment units were designed referring to the guidelines and summarized in the report and attached the detailed design as an Appendix.

A proper location was selected to construct the treatment plant considering the land use of the area, availability of land, and environmental, social, and economic aspects of possible locations. The amounts of residual solids were estimated in the detailed calculation section and summarized in the report. As a solution for the handling of generated sludge from the treatment process, it is proposed to dispose of the sludge into a more extensive treatment facility located 55km away from the site after transporting them by trains into the mentioned site. The materials of pipes required to transport wastewater to the plant and the treated wastewater to the discharge water bodies were proposed with the necessary equipment for the treatment plant.

The hydraulic profile of the process and flow diagram with mass balances are presented accordingly. For a sustainable construction and operation of the facility, some measures have been proposed to mitigate the impacts, especially on residents and the area's existing environment. A brief outline of the construction phase's health and safety has been proposed in the last chapter of the report.

CHAPTER 01 â€“ Introduction to Wastewater treatment
Wastewater is generally composed of 3 types of water, which are blackwater, greywater, and stormwater, of which contain concentrations of biodegradable organic matter, large numbers of bacteria, microbes, and suspended and dissolved solids. The treatment of wastewater includes natural, biological, and chemical stages to improve water properties so that water can be disposed or reused without any health risks.

The treatment method and its efficiency must be within the following measures:

Excellent quality of treated water enables the reuse of it in various ways, such as:

Low-grade purposes in building, irrigation, retained in reservoirs or ponds, or used in any other purpose maximize the use of treated water and preserve the water wealth.

Treatment Stages

Treatment stages are divided into 3 main divisions:
1. Preliminary treatment ( Screening, grit removal, and FOG removal)
2. Primary treatment (Primary sedimentation)
3. Secondary biological treatment (Activated sludge, trickling filter, or another biological treatment process)

Preliminary treatment
Domestic and municipal wastewaters contain large objects like plastics, rags, larger floating materials and grit that can interrupt the treatment processes or cause disturbances to the machinery and equipment used in operations, and also cause difficulties in maintenance work. To minimize the potential problems, these materials must be removed and separated before the start of proper treatment. Preliminary treatment at the Head of Works removes these constituents from the influent wastewater. Preliminary treatment consists typically of screening, grit removal, and usually flow measurement.

â€¢ Screens:
Generally, the screening is the first unit operation used at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Its purpose is to reserve the floating materials by sieving or filtration, such as wood, paper, rags, and any other material affecting the following treatment processes. Some wastewater treatment plants use both coarse screens and fine screens. It can be cleaned either mechanically or manually. (Head loss is expected when screens partially block wastewater flow)
