Sustainable Water Readings

a) Look into one of the situations Fred Pearce described 10 years ago in the 2nd or 3rd sections. What has happened since his reporting? How has the water management situation changed? Have things gone better or worse than his (probably dire) prediction?

b) Under what circumstances should a population use fossil (e.g. ancient, non‐renewable) groundwater? If you feel this is something that should be regulated, how would you set up such regulation?

c) What kind questions would you ask if your international aid organization was deciding whether to fund an irrigation project? What about a well‐drilling project?

Hamoun Lake during Fred Pearce’s report was undergoing a dry spell and is on the verge of drying up. Well, today Hamoun Lake is still dry and is one of the recent ecological disasters. The lake has turned into a desert and it is in a worse state than Pearce’s prediction. Today, Hamoun Lake is not the sole water resource in Iran which has dried up. Iran is facing a water crisis as the rainfall declined by 16% in their country. Not only does a water scarcity result from this but also a phenomenon called ‘120 days wind’ which carries dust from the now barren Hamoun Lake. The dust causes a choking haze which produces health issues such as respiratory diseases, depression, and cancer. The management of the crisis has been very difficult for Iran since the upstream of the river providing water for the lake is in a different territory....
