Hydrology
• The map above shows the river basin of the Red River in Vietnam (surface area of about 160 000 km2) with the locations of a number of precipitation stations. Determine the Thiessen polygons for the area within the black rectangle necessary for the determination of the areally averaged precipitation. Use the given data in this document. (2 points)
• Determine the weights for each polygon and determine the areally averaged precipitation for each month in 1996 in mm. Use the given data in this document. . (3 points)
• Determine the monthly areally averaged precipitation through simple (arithmetic) averaging as well and discuss possible differences with the monthly averages obtained with Thiessen polygons. (2 points)
• Determine for the day with the largest areally averaged precipitation (as obtained with Thiessen polygons) a ‘Depth-Area’ curve (see Shaw et al. 9.4). For this, divide the area in 1, 2, 4 and 8 parts by using the derived Thiessen polygons and determine for each of the four cases the largest precipitation amount in one of the respectively 1, 2, 4 and 8 area(s). Subsequently make a sketch of the areally averaged precipitation as a function of the surface area and discuss the results (compare with the figure on slide 37 of lecture 2). (3 points)
