Simone De Beauvoir

According to Radtke (2017), feminist theory is founded on three main principles. Notably, it is not a static theory, but an approach that keeps changing depending on society's prevailing circumstances. According to Radtke (2017), the feminist theory posits that women can contribute to any world aspect, have been limited from achieving their full potential, and much was needed to achieve social transformation. Several women have made significant contributions to the feminist theory; among them is Simone De Beauvoir. The most important parts of the feminist theory contributed by Simone De Beauvoir involves her spirited championship for gender equality. Simone De Beauvoir believed that women suffered from social injustice because they were women.

In her famous book, The Second Sex, Simone De Beauvoir posits that women have been subject to long-standing oppression by men through the societal assigned role as the man’s ‘other’ (Bergoffen & Burke, 2020). By extension, women do not get a chance to be themselves, and cannot pursue dreams and careers they would want as individuals. The relegation as ‘men’s other’ does not allow women the freedom they need to succeed in the world. Simone De Beauvoir notes that the men who take on the role of self consistently define how women should be clarified. Men automatically become the subject or the absolute, while the woman remains the other (Bergoffen & Burke, 2020).

According to Bergoffen and Burke (2020), De Beauvoir challenged the long-standing passive notions of patriarchy in the west as “part of the existential-phenomenological project” (para. 6). Through her literature, De Beauvoir found an avenue in literature through which she made known her ethical, political, and philosophical ideals. Literature became her weapon of choice, where she portrayed the social injustice against women. De Beauvoir challenged the patriarchal status quo rather dramatically by publishing her book, The Second Sex (Bergoffen & Burke, 2020). This book did not, in essence, attack sexual decency; instead, it attacked patriarchal indecency. According to Bergoffen and Burke (2020), De Beauvoir became a voice for women as it stressed the need for justice, demanded social, political, and social change. As it is known today, it is widely believed that feminism was a factor of the contributions made by Simone De Beauvoir.

According to Marx and Engels (1969), society created social classes that existed as direct opposites, such as the oppressor and the oppressed and the freed and the enslaved.
