Discussion: Managing the Environment
When responding discuss inherent tension that exists between the conservationist and the preservationist mindset.

As America became more devolved the notion of conservation became more pronounced. “The evolution of the Conservation Movement collections covers the movement to preserve and protect America’s wildlife, wild lands and other natural resources from 1890-1920” (Library of Congress, 2019). The Progressive Movement happened in tandem with the Conservation Movement, more Americans were trying to change laws and practices, such as child labor and allowing women to vote, and they felt the environment should be protected. Conservationists such as John Muir tried to bring attention to areas of nature that were unknown to the public and were in trouble of being taken advantage of, such as the Hetch Hetchy Valley being an area where the city of San Francisco built a dam.
The differences between Conservationism and Progressivism is “conservation is generally associated with the protection of natural resources, while preservation is associated with the protection of buildings, objects, and landscapes. Put simply conservation seeks the proper use of nature, while preservation seeks protection of nature from use” (National Park Service, 2015).

Conservation and preservation movements were developed to protect land, wildlife, and other resources. They both are similar because they involve protection. These two movements emerged out of the progressive era when natural resources were being exploited. People like John Powell thought that it was a great idea to conserve nature by allowing humans to use water and land resources responsibly. This would allow continual use for a long time. His ideas influenced the Reclamation Act. As a result, the public would now be able to buy and cultivate the land. Mrs. Marion Crocker argues for the conservation of the trees saying, "Wood is demanded in all the industries or the arts, for almost all things we use" (Crocker 337). Conservatists wanted to use the land for the benefit of humans for cultivation. Preservation of the land focuses on keeping the land the way it is without human intervention, unlike conservation. The land has value in and of itself. George Marsh explains that there is a relationship between man and the environment. "Man has too long forgotten that the earth was given to him for usufruct alone, not for consumption..."(Marsh, 328). Conservation has impacts on the environment such as interrupting the natural flow of water, soil erosion, animal extinction. Preservation helps eliminate these problems by allowing nature to stay in its organic state.
