In the Time of the Butterflies profiles the Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva, Maria, and Dede) who fought against the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. The Mirabal sisters took a role that was unusual in Latin America at the time, that of the female revolutionary. They were upper-class Dominican women who actually knew Trujillo, and in the movie, we see Trujillo attempt to court Minerva, who turns him down. Minerva is the first of the sisters to be spurred to activism, and she enlists her other sisters in a spirited appeal to their consciences.
