The purpose of this test is to get you to think critically about controversial questions in the Middle East. Please be succinct, but probing. You should be able to answer the following questions based on readings from the New York Times, the notes I sent, and some limited research online.
1. What were the causes of the Arab Spring that led to demonstrations in Egypt and Syria and why ultimately did it fail?
2. To what extent did the US intervention in Iraq help create ISIS? Would ISIS exist if the US had not intervened and deposed Saddam Hussein?
3. The Oslo I and II Accords were doomed to failure. Do you agree or disagree. Remember that ultimately Israel made an offer in 2000 that Arafat rejected. All the terms of the agreements are easy to find online, so that should help you.
