2. Juan and Maria are two friends from Spain who decide to move to the United Kingdom in search of work. Juan quickly finds a position as an investment banker and settles in London. Several months later, he is joined in London by his Argentinean wife, Rosa, and their two children, Julia and Fernando (both Spanish nationals). Julia and Fernando are enrolled at the local primary school, where they soon make new friends. Unfortunately, some time later, events take a turn for the worst. Juan quits his job with the bank and runs off to Colombia with his secretary, Angelina, leaving Rosa to care for the children in London.
Rosa wishes to stay in the United Kingdom in order to allow Julia and Fernando to complete their school education. Without employment and unable to pay for the rent of their Notting Hill apartment, Rosa applies to the local authority for a housing assistance allowance and additional help with living costs. Her application is rejected on the basis that neither she nor her children enjoy any rights under EU law to remain in the United Kingdom following the departure of Juan.
Maria’s ambitions of seeking employment in the United Kingdom are altogether more modest. After resigning from her position as CEO of a large manufacturing firm in Spain, she is looking for a stress free job with minimum responsibility. Seven months have passed since Maria’s arrival in the UK and she has still not been able to find a job.
Advise Rosa and Maria as to their rights (if any) under European Union law.

Leon and Scarlett, both British nationals, are friends who move to Poland from the UK and begin looking for work. Leon applies for a position as a cashier in a bank. He is offered the job but then told by the manager that he must first pass an advanced language test to demonstrate fluency in Polish. Leon narrowly fails the test and the offer is withdrawn. Four months pass and, with resources being scarce and no job opportunities coming up, Leon seeks to claim a workseeker allowance from the Polish State. His application is refused by the authorities.
Scarlett immediately finds a weekend job as a waitress in a hotel. She enjoys the job but the pay is very low, although she is able to stay in on-site accommodation. Several months later, her boyfriend of five years, Boris, a German national, joins her in Poland and also moves in to the accommodation. Boris is not keen on finding a job and assumes Scarlett will pay his way, but he does register to take some classes at a local college. When it becomes apparent that Scarlett cannot afford to support him, he applies for a minimum subsistence allowance. This application is refused by the Polish authorities.
One evening after a night out Boris gets in a fight and is arrested for assault. The authorities plan to deport him immediately. Advise Leon, Scarlett and Boris as to their status and rights (if any) under EU law.
