QuestionQuestion

For this part of the assignment, use the attached 2012 American National Election Study.

The dependent variable is XYmodsex_index, an index in which a higher score indicates greater agreement that women are discriminated against in the workplace.

The first independent variable is XYlibcon_self, a measure of respondents’ political views. A high value equals greater conservatism.

1) Variable creation and recoding
a. The ANES’ measure of gender, gender_respondent, is coded 1 for males and zero for females. Create a new variable by recoding this so male=0 and female=1 (you can also use the variable XYgender_respondent, recoded gender, which is already recoded).
b. Compute an interaction between gender and political views.

2) Create nested regressions predicting views about gender discrimination. The first model should include XYlibcon_self and the recoded gender measure as independent variables. In the second, add the interaction. Interpret the statistical significance of the interaction in Model 2. (If an interaction is not statistically significant, it should be removed from the regression!)

3) Interpret the effect (slope) of political views on opinions about gender discrimination for men. Interpret the effect for women.

4) Interpret the rest of the models
a. In Model 1, which of the two independent variables has a stronger effect on views about gender discrimination in the workplace? How do you know?
b. Interpret R squared for Model 2.

The interaction term genview is not statistically significant(3,4918)=0.914. p>0.05. We can therefore conclude that gender does not moderate political views on the effects of political views on the discrimination of women....
