Recycling Survey

In a bid to determine how a recycling initiative is progressing, the mayor of a large city hired a recycling company to conduct a survey to estimate the number of residents interested in recycling aluminum cans, glass, and newspapers. The company's supervisor Tim, surveys 1,000 city residents and reports to the mayor that:

200 recycle glass (G)

300 recycle paper (P)

60 recycle cans and paper

15 recycle paper and glass

10 recycle all three

450 recycle cans (C)

50 recycle cans and glass

1) Draw a Venn diagram that represents the above sets using C to represent cans, P to represent paper, and G to represent glass and fill in the cardinalities of each region.

2) Tim also reports that of the 450,000 city residents, 113,000 do not recycle at all. Discuss your result. [Hint: Is Tim’s report correct?]

3) Estimate the number of city residents who recycle cans only.
