The cancerous cells of mesenchymal origin exhibit differentiation of osteoblasts. These differentiated osteoblasts produce malignant osteoid. The malignant osteoid is weaker than the normal bone matrix. Osteosarcoma is commonly known to affect the areas of bones that have fast growth rate and the end of long bones (around the knee). The most common sites that are affected bones by this tumor are distal femur, proximal tibia and proximal humerus.
