Malaria is traditionally one of the most debilitating diseases in the sub-Saharan Africa region. It is primarily caused by Plasmodium falciparum, a protozoan carried largely by mosquitoes (Meyrowitsch et al, 2011). Recently, sub-Saharan countries have developed sounder strategies to combat the disease due to an increase in planning and vigilance. O’Meara et al (2010) report that lasting declines in malaria incidence have occurred in South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique. Since malaria is a difficult disease to control in tropical areas, public health officials must develop flexible, multi-phase plans to attack its spread, including fighting the disease at its source by eliminating the mosquitoes that act as the vector for P. falciparum. Meyrowitsch et al (2011) note that the “improved quality of health systems, including improved case management, such as enhanced diagnostics and implementation of highly effective anti-malarial drugs” are causes for decreased malaria rates in high incidence countries such as Rwanda, Burundi, and Kenya.

Controlling Malarial Vectors
