Diarrhoeal disease is one of the major killers of children under five years of age. The infection pathways are mainly connected with poor water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices (Demberere, Muyambo, Mutengu, Ncozana, & Manyeruke, 2014, p. 98). In order to terminate the transmissions chain, intervention efforts need to jointly address all of WASH areas like chemical water treatment, hand washing and open defecation practices. Therefore, it would be beneficial to conduct field studies which assess on-site WASH conditions in households and identify behaviors and practices in local communities which increase the risk of infection.

Specific and targeted questionnaire could be developed to measure the local community’ WASH indicators. These indicators would include use of, and access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities, as well as defecation practices and safe disposal of child faeces.
