Several weeks ago, I experienced something that helped me to better understand a key nursing concept and the importance of following protocol. During my shift at the Family Practice Clinic, I was giving immunization shots to pediatric patients. My second patient was an 11 year old boy and I gave him one shot while the nurse gave him another. After administering the shot, I clicked the safety cover and placed the bandage onto the boy’s arm while still holding the needle in my left hand. While applying the bandage, I accidentally stuck myself in the arm with the used needle; apparently, the safety cover was not properly secured....
