Question
Problem 3. Polytropes

a) Identify two types of stars (by mass and evolutionary state) to which a solution of the Lane-Emder equation with polytropic index n = 1.5 applies.

b) A star has pressure and density given by an n = 2.5 polytrope, and the plasma satisfies the ideal gas law for a solar composition plasma (monatomic ionized gas). Derive (and simplify) the condition between T and P for convective stability (i.e. substitute for dT/dr and dP/dr in the convective stability criterion).

Do not solve numerically, but leave in terms of the polytrope constant K, and any other necessary physical constants
