Question 1
A screen with three equally spaced slits of the width b and separation a is illuminated at normal incidence with monochromatic light with wavelength λ. A diffraction pattern is obtained at a distance L on another screen positioned behind the screen with the slits.
Calculate and compare the distance between the diffraction maxima with numbers m and m+1 for the cases when either the middle or one of the side slits is blocked. Assume a>>mλ.

Question 2
Light is diffracted by a 1 cm x 1 cm screen containing 1000 slits/mm. The incident beam is defined by a circular aperture so that its diameter on the screen is 0.2 cm.
(i) Can two spectral lines 0.1 nm apart and centred at 1000 nm be resolved in the second diffraction order in the diffraction pattern obtained in the above experiment? Justify your answer.
(ii) Estimate what the minimum diameter of the beam on the screen should be so that two spectral lines 1 nm apart centred at 500 nm can be resolved in the first diffraction order.

Question 3
In an experiment a laser beam is focussed on a sample by a lens. The sample has microstructures spatially separated by 5 microns. In the experiment, each micro-structure has to be studied individually using the laser, so that illumination of two or more adjacent micro-structure must be avoided. If the laser wavelength is 632 nm and the diameter of the laser beam is 1 mm, find focal lengths of the lens suitable for this experiment.

Question 4
A camera with an objective lens of diameter 5 mm is used at night to film a road a large distance away. Estimate the maximum distance from the camera, at which a motorcycle with a single headlight can be distinguished from a car with two headlights.
