Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia that affects millions of people, and in recent decades, researchers have begun to identify the specific ways in which changes in the brain create the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease. This paper will review current research regarding how the brain changes to result in the pathology observed to be Alzheimer’s disease as well as progress in finding treatments.
The most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) describes Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as a neurocognitive disorder. In general, neurocognitive disorders entail a range of problems including difficulties with attention, processing speed, executive functioning, learning, memory, language skills, motor skills, emotional functioning, and interpersonal functioning. While there are many kinds of neurocognitive disorders with these qualities, AD is distinct because of its slow progression. Often times, AD develops over the course of years, sometimes taking as many as twenty years before symptoms are severe enough to be diagnosed. This insidious onset is unlike other neurocognitive disorders. While AD usually is not recognized until after
