According to this study, approximately 1 percent of American women give birth at home. The primary aim of this research was to describe the reasons that these women choose home birth. The researchers used a secondary analysis of previously collected data to qualitatively explore the reasons for choosing home births.
Data from sample of 160 women, living in the United States, who had planned a home birth at least once was obtained via an online survey. Participants were predominately married (91%), white (87%), and college educated (62%). Their responses to one essay question: “Why did you choose home birth?” were analyzed for content.
