Stoopâ€™s Experiment: Extended Study

Stroopâ€™s original experiment explores the ability of the human brain to react to different scenarios having been exposed to certain conditions. It shows the cognitive reaction to colors when a little interference is initialized. In developing my experiment, I have considered the ability of individuals to identify different animals despite them having alternative names. The experiment further establishes the ability of the brain to read out the different names regardless of the alternative picture being displayed. With the participants being able to correctly identify the names under normal circumstances, the experiment seeks to demonstrate that interferences can not only cause slower reaction times but also result in the wrong reaction, with participants unable to distinguish between the interference and the goal.

Research Question

The experiment focusses on two research questions: â€œThe effect of different animal names in interfering with identifying alternative animal pictures?â€ and â€œThe effect of different animal pictures in interfering with identifying given animal names.

Participants

Participants were randomly selected from three junior high schools. The study aimed at testing the ability of the students to identify different animals from conflicting names. In agreement with the schools, teachers requested volunteers to participate in the given experiment in accordance with responsible conduct of research (Shamoo & Resnik, 2009). All the participants were expected to be well conversant with the different animals and be able to distinguish among the big five; buffalo, leopard, rhino, lion, and elephant. There were a total of 120 participants (70 girls and 50 boys), with each school producing 40 students for the experiment. Of the sample selected, 35% were African-Americans, 40% Caucasians, while the rest made up 25% (multiracial, Hispanic, and Asians).
