Both the prophecy of Daniel in the Old Testament and the Book of Revelation in the New Testament have historically been some of the most obscure and hard to understand books of the Bible. Religious leaders and enthusiasts, theologians and later biblical scholars produced a great number of various interpretations of both books. Many of those interpretations strove to predict future events, especially those heralding the end of the world.The main and the most fundamental similarity between the two books is their genre. Both books belong to the apocalyptic literature. The very Greek word apokalypsis translates into English as “revelation.” The Encyclopedia Britannica defines this genre as containing “supernaturally inspired cataclysmic events that will transpire at the end of the world. A product of the Judeo-Christian tradition, apocalyptic literature... takes narrative form, employs esoteric language, expresses a pessimistic view of the present, and treats the final events as imminent.” These two books are the only ones we now find in the canonical text of the Bible.
