ReadCanaan Land, pp 61-81.

Use the readings and film as background to answer this question:
"Was Henry McNeil Turner a man of his time or was he a radical who was ahead of his time?" Which side do you choose and why?

Write a 1-2 page paper choosing a side and answering the question. While the film is an excellent source of information for this assignment, it is strongly recommended you read the article before arriving at your argument. Don't assume you know about Bishop Turner because you are from his denomination and do not use Wikipedia to look him up or any other outside readings.

Directions: Read the pages indicated below. Discuss each question.

1. Why was the Black church as important to Blacks after the Civil War as it had been before? Give examples of the type of leadership the church gave to the community.
2. What is the difference between an industrial education, as espoused by Booker T. Washington, and a liberal education as championed by W. E. B. DuBois?

4. Raboteau says there were two main areas of concern for Blacks after the Civil War: 1) The redemption of Africa and 2) The Mission of the Darker Races. Explain each. What prompted this discussion?
