Each student is expected to complete a 5-7 page paper. This paper will articulate the principles of sermon development, with a particular focus on the place and importance of scripture, theology, reason, tradition and story in preaching.

Each paper will be written consistent the principles set forth in Kate A. Turabian’s A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Thesis and Dissertations, 7th edition. A title page, footnotes, and bibliography are essential. The primary sources for this paper are assigned and recommended texts for this course.

To articulate in writing, the principles of sermon development including the place of scripture, theology, reason, tradition, and story in preaching.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that preaching is at the heart of Christianity. An important part of Jesus’ earthly ministry was preaching. The Gospel of Matthew left a record that shortly after Jesus’ public proclamation as the Messiah and His temptation in the wilderness, “Jesus began to preach and say ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand’” (Matthew 4:17). Following in His footsteps, the apostles continued preaching, broadening their audience and travelling as far as it was feasible. This was how the Gospel was spread and the people got an opportunity to accept Jesus, reconsider their lives, and ultimately, become saved.
Sermon has remained in the center of the liturgical life ever since, although in the medieval period in Europe, the dominant Roman Catholic Church did not encourage its lay members to read the Scripture, and knowledge of the Bible significantly declined among the masses of people. The Reformation renewed the focus on the Scripture, and preaching once again became the cornerstone of congregational worship and the main method of spreading the Gospel.
