The social purpose of theater is to use art as a means of calling society's attention to social problems. We are more likley to listen to a political message that is part of an artistic performance or a form of entertainment than coming directly from a politician or critic.
Because theater is in performed live and in real-time, with characters that depict prototypes of real people, it is an ideal medium for these social messages. Theater has had a social purpose for centuries. Shakespeare's plays for example reflected what was happening in England at that time....
