Question
Write a response to Tony Hoagland’s poem “The Change.” Do not quote from any source other than the poem itself. In fact, you should not go online to read about the poem; Write your own thoughts on the poem, how it works, what its details are like. The paper should follow MLA format. You may discuss the poem’s internal characteristics, such as its use of metaphor, or its historical theme or political significance. You may set it in the context of its time (it was published in 2003), or you can simply look at it as a work of art. You should quote from the poem. Do not quote numerous lines in order to fill up space.

Although The Change by Tony Hoagland was published in 2003, it could have very well been written today. With the advancement of Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement which sought to stop the apparent police brutality and prejudice against African-Americans and other people of color, it would appear that the United States still needs to be constantly reminded of the issues of race in the country. The Change deals precisely with the rude awakening that racism continues to persist to this day, that it did not end in 1863 with the freeing of the slaves.

Hoagland opens the poem with bright, colorful visuals— the turning of the pages of glossy fashion magazines is likened to the changing of the times or seasons. It is interesting that the author made use of the simile as fashion magazines mostly display outlandish ensembles that standout against everyday wear; such garb would look absurd and distasteful to those who are not fashion-forward.
