In Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”, the author expresses her beliefs regarding women's roles in marriage, feminine identity, and self-discovery. When analyzing the story, it is easy to notice how the author develops her beliefs through the main character – Louise Mallard. As Louise hears the news of her husband’s death she begins a process of mourning, which later turns into relief and an awakening of sorts. Her ultimate death, although on the surface may be seen as a physical reaction due to her apparent heart disease, may be analyzed further. In other words, she may never have suffered from heart disease, but rather anxiety or depression. At the time, however, this may not have been acceptable for women. The story characterized the belief that marriage, during that period of time in history, may have been socially expected but not always based on mutual respect and understanding.
